TAKING CARE OF OUR HEROES
The Trend Toward Community-Based Holistic Wellness
The Trend Toward Community-Based Holistic Wellness
With the number of Veterans dealing with stress, PTSD, and suicide on the rise, the need for alternative therapies has risen. As a result, a variety of nontraditional techniques – from yoga and meditation to equine therapy – are being employed to help veterans cope with life
after service.
Transcendental meditation training provided by the David Lynch Foundation, yoga, community acupuncture, and custom workshops designed to address eating, sleeping, moving, breathing and emotional stability as factors in overall emotional well being and quality of life. All of these services are provided to the veteran at no-cost.
Over half a million U.S. troops deployed since 2001 suffer PTSD. Yet less than 20% will receive adequate care due to lack of effective treatments, fear of stigma or insufficient government resources.
And half of those with PTSD will not receive any care at all.
TM training, which has been extensively researched by over 340 peer-reviewed articles, including grants by the NIH has resulted in a 40-55% reduction of symptoms of PTSD and depression, 42% decrease in insomnia, and a 30% improvement in the quality of life.
The training, which is provided to all participants in the OWS/Wellness program by the David Lynch Foundation, is simple to learn, it is easy to practice, and does not involve controlling the mind, religion or changing philosophies. It is a “take home” tool that is confidential, private and can be practiced anywhere at any time.
Thousands of Veterans can receive the very real, practical benefits that come from this simple, stress-reducing, health promoting technique.
